Riyad Mahrez Not Prioritized and Leverages His Spot on Manchester City

Manchester City’s 28-year-old winger Riyad Mahrez seems to be feeling a little left out and prioritized last in Pep Guardiola’s team. Mahrez has made 42 appearances in his debut season at City and was nabbed by City last summer at the cost of £60 million.

However, the Algerian footballer has been an unused substitute in the last three matches of Manchester City. Mahrez feels like he is not being utilized enough, and that his technical skills should have been extracted more than just 13 starts in the Premier League. The 28-year-old winger’s performance has fluctuated throughout the year and has scored six goals, three assists and out of 11 goals, 4 have come against lower-league opposition, in 26 league appearances since moving to City from Leicester in July.

The Algerian player was chosen by Guardiola himself over Leroy Sane for the first leg of his team’s Champions League quarter-final loss against Tottenham. During the FA Cup last month, Mahrez was also away with City, blazing a late penalty over the bar in a 0-0 draw against Liverpool last October at Anfield Stadium.

Mahrez now threatens to quit Manchester City for not having enough playing opportunities and exposure. Guardiola says that Mahrez has been well at training and publicly addressed an apology to the Algerian player regarding his feeling of being minded in the team. Guardiola says he is “sad” that Mahrez feels that way and that his winger lacked starting opportunities in the team.
