Manchester United defeated Brentford 3-0 in their last home game of the season on Monday.

The Red Devils put forth a far better performance, saying goodbye to Nemanja Matic and, most likely, Juan Mata and Edinson Cavani, whose contracts are slated to expire at the end of the season.

After just 9 minutes, United seized the lead when Bruno Fernandes turned in Anthony Elanga’s fizzed cross. Fernandes surged into the area and blasted a powerful effort past David Raya.

In the first 45 minutes, the Bees were 2nd best, but they did have a few solid opportunities, including a Christian Eriksen shot that was saved, an Ivan Toney header that flashed over, and Bryan Mbeumo’s strong drive that struck the side netting.

United dominated possession in the 1st half and came near with a Cristiano Ronaldo free-kick before Mata snatched a shot with his right foot and blasted wide.

Before the interval, Mata teed up Ronaldo for a side-foot finish just inside the box, but the goal was called out for offside in the build-up after a VAR assessment.

Just after the hour mark in the 2nd half, the Red Devils scored another when Ronaldo was pushed to the ground inside the area and handed a penalties, which he dutifully dispatched past Raya.

Raphael Varane, an ex-Real Madrid teammate, added a 3rd goal shortly after when he met an inswinging corner and nudged it into the net.

Brentford had earlier troubled De Gea after the interval with chances from Eriksen and Toney, but United dominated for the majority of the night at Old Trafford.

Late in the game, Mathias Jensen came close to scoring, but his shot, which was the game’s last serious chance, was stopped on approach to goal.
