Liverpool showed Europe that they are a forced to be reckoned with by defeating UEFA Champions League rookies FC Midtjylland.

Despite losing Fabinho to injury, the Reds still managed to score two goals and fend off Midtjylland to secure the top place in Group D of the UEFA Champions League group stages. Fabinho succumbed to a suspected hamstring injury and was replaced by Rhys Williams for the rest of the game. Fabinho’s injury added to Liverpool’s woes as they also lost Virgil van Dijk earlier this season due to a knee injury.

The first half of the match ended in a deadlock, with Liverpool failing to score an attempt at the target. The Reds started without stars Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane, but all made an appearance in the second half of the game.

The deadlock was broken early in the second half as Diogo Jota scored at the 55-minute mark from a cross by Trent Alexander-Arnold. Jota’s goal was Liverpool’s 10,000th goal since its founding in 1892.

The UCL rookies had a close attempt at tying the game but luck wasn’t on their side that day. Mohamed Salah doubled the lead for Liverpool by kicking-in a penalty goal at the 93-minute mark. The penalty was awarded after Salah was taken down by Paulinho. The final whistle sounded and the rookies failed to score a single goal against the Premier League champions.

Despite the loss, the Danish champions gave Liverpool a good match by performing well compared to their first UCL match since forming in 1999. In fact, the rookies almost took the lead early in the game and equalizing it before Salah put the nail in the coffin.

Liverpool already garnered six points from two games and will travel to Italy to face their group rivals Atalanta. Meanwhile, Midtjylland will battle Eredivisie champions Ajax for their third match in the UCL.
