On the third week of April, 12 powerful clubs announced their intention to break away from the UEFA tournaments because they would create their own European Super League.
This idea might be wonderful for the football clubs. However, lots of sports fans did not like the concept. Instead of the expected support, fans criticized the move—that it was fueled by greed, money, and power.
The intentions of the European Super League Dreamcast were said to involve more money. Thus, yields more power than what they have now.
Combining these two makes the supposed European Super League football greedy because they are guaranteeing revenue for founding members. When in fact, some of the involved clubs are not in the good pitch of performances in the past years.
People, even the administrations, claim that the very essence of the said European Super League football as unpersuasive. Such plan by the proposed European Super League Dreamcast is judged to be against the essence of football games for both the clubs, fans, and everybody else.
Because of this supposed new European Super League football, fans protested. They believe these teams who planned the European Super League Dreamcast as the “Dirty Dozen” who think of their fans as consumers only.
Of course, this newly formed European Super League raged feelings to fans. The supporters and legacy fans even called it as the “ultimate betrayal” because the teams are just boosting their own political and financial interests, instead of footballing for the greater good.
Because of the fans’ outrage, the European Super League football executives apologized for the said plan. The fan power showed through and this is why the project of the new European Super League Dreamcast would remain a bubble for now.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez said that the 12 clubs who agreed to joining and forming of the new European Super League cannot leave due to the binding contracts signed. He said in an interview, ” I don’t need to explain what a binding contract is, but effectively the clubs cannot leave.”
Perez added, “Some of them, due to pressure, have said they’re leaving [the new and supposed European Super League].” As announced after the backlash, 9 out of 12 clubs withdrew from the European Super League Dreamcast.
Most of the supposed founding members have already dropped the cast of the European Super League Dreamcast. So for now, they cannot go ahead all the way to their plans. Thus, because of the binding contracts they have in the present football leagues and fan power.
With this knowing, that the proposed European Super League football would not proceed, this may be a win for football fans and stans. However, because of this issue, we cannot deny that the fact that this left a crack and bitter taste for many.
