Malaysia is one of the many countries that got infected with the ongoing global pandemic: COVID-19. Although the novel coronavirus disease pandemic is still here, not fully alleviated, the Sukma XX Johor secretariat aimed to continue the preparations for the 20th Malaysia Games.
Johor Tourism, Youth and Sports Committee chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi confirmed that Sukma never stopped preparing for the games even when there is a forced postponement from Malaysia’s movement control order (MCO).
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican added that several games venues are nearly complete based on their site visits done this week.
In Reezal’s statement, “For example, the Larkin Aquatic Centre is currently just lacking a warm-up pool which can be completed in less than a month”.
The state expects this stellar event would happen in the first quarter of 2021. Officials have been focusing on hosting Sukma Johor since it is the first since 1992. With this notion, officials make sure that all aspects are of the highest quality for the 20th Malaysia Games.
The 20th Malaysia Games will be held in three districts with Johor Baru hosting the bulk of the program with 28 events; Muar hosting the canoeing, weightlifting, and silambam; Kota Tinggi hosting the cruise, as well as bike riding.
As of July 9, 2020, the country has a total of 8,677 cases. 8,486 of them recovered—giving Malaysia a 97.8% recovery rate. Active cases in Malaysia are currently 70.
